Uplift & Empower with a PWP

PWP = Personal Website Profile
Having the opportunity throughout many years to speak and train for many companies, I have often entered into consultations with various people in regards to uplifting and empowering their employees, staff and salespeople. How do we empower? What can we do different? What tools are out there that can help us improve the morale and attitudes of our employees? Great questions that I’m sure many of you have had too!

Sometime ago when a good friend of mine contacted me to offer me a Vice Presidency position for a marketing company here in Dallas. After pondering the offer I said to him: “If I accept, I want to create an environment that will cause the staff and salespeople to WANT to come to work. We’ll need to be so tight on recognition, communication, morale, cohesiveness and build a spirit of camaraderie that if you and I were ever to go to war that all of our staff would follow!” Quite a statement of fact yet I knew that in order to be successful in my new position that this profound goal would have to be accomplished.

Embarking out on this new position and wanting to back up my goal, many things came to mind. The common items such as award trips, recognition programs, monthly plaques, the Presidents Award, etc. Yet, I wanted something unique, something that would have a greater influence on my new company, something that we throw lots of GLUE on (Glue – structure that will make them want to stay!) and make an impact on the staff. I employed many things yet the biggest hit of all was implementing Personal Website Profiles (PWP) for each individual.

The personal websites profiles were designed around a template, meaning that each site for the staff was basically a look-a-like in general features yet the content, photos and information were specific to the individual staff member – offering a savings for the participating company. Because it was a template design, the webmaster was not bogged down by time intensive matters as each individual loaded their own information.

The overall objectives of the PWP’s are:

Infrastructure
Setting up the infrastructure for your webmaster should be relatively easy. The webmaster creates a form on your website and each person that participates in the Personal Website Profile program fills out all the information – online. When completed, the staff member hits submit and the content is automatically loaded into the website. The webmaster then will make a few adjustments including the loading of photos then presto – the site is complete!

This is by far the easiest way, however, you need to emphasize to your staff to take their time in writing out the content so the page looks and feels nice and complete.

Recognition
Just about everyone wants to be uplifted and empowered. Recognition is the acknowledgement of an individual’s or team’s desired behavior, effort, or business result that supports the organization’s goals and values. Written praise is an acknowledgement of an individual’s achievement, and that too can be shared on their PWP.

Method Of Operation
Implement a specific method of operation for everyone to follow.

  1. Along with your webmaster, a department head will have to be assigned to lead the charge and work closely with the webmaster to make the personal websites a hit.
  2. Choose a staff member and help them create their website which in turn became the sample site for everyone to see when we launched the new program. We made sure it looked good, all the bugs had been worked out before release.
  3. Use your already existing website address and gave the staff websites their own area, resulting in a savings and an immediate URL address for each individual. Example: <http://www.yourcompanyurl.com/yourname.html>
  4. A specific F.A.Q. section was created to answer the multitudes of questions that would come from the staff.

There you have it – a new tool. Commit to the PWP’s. Know that most will like them and participate yet some will not. Over time, as more people participate, more will join. Place a heavy significance on the awards and recognition area for each staff member. The end result from PWP’s will be a happier staff, engaging in something new, they’ll know that their employer cares about them and is interested in them. Last but not least, the PWP’s will help create an on-going environment where PEOPLE WILL WANT TO COME TO WORK!
